12 of life’s “primary foods” and how to nourish them

The food on your plate is important, but how about all the other areas of life that feed you, such as your relationships, career, spiritual practice, environment, physical activity, and more?

This is what we refer to as “primary food”, and when these areas are balanced, the food on your plate becomes secondary. Nourishing yourself through the 12 primary food areas will become an important aspect of how you transform your own health, in addition to supporting others in feeling fulfilled.

🌱 The 12 Primary Food Areas

  • Relationships
What it is: Supportive, loving relationships that energize and inspire you.

How to Nourish: Call or text someone just to appreciate them—no agenda, no favors. Connection grows in the small gestures.

  • Physical Activity
What it is: Movement that makes you feel strong, alive, and connected to your body.

How to Nourish: Try one new exercise technique per month. If you always lift, try running. Yoga guru? Try circuit training! Muscles love novelty, growth loves new things.

  • Career
What it is: Work that feels meaningful and fulfilling — or at least not soul-sucking.

How to Nourish: Identify one task this week that drains you most, and one that energizes you. Do more of the energizer, less of the drainer. Tiny shifts matter.

  • Finances
What it is: Feeling empowered and secure around money.

How to Nourish: Set up “fun fund” jars—one for bills, one for savings, and one for guilt-free splurges (like that new pair of wild workout leggings).

  • Education
What it is: Lifelong learning, growth, and personal development.

How to Nourish: Listen to a short podcast while commuting or cooking—whether fitness, history, or cryptid lore. Keep learning in snack-sized bites.

  • Health
What it is: Mental, emotional, and physical well-being — beyond just “not being sick.”

How to Nourish: Schedule a massage or spa treatment you’ve been putting off. Proactive beats reactive every time.

  • Home Cooking
What it is: Nourishing yourself through the act of preparing meals — not just the ingredients.

How to Nourish: Cook one meal with 3 colors of veggies. More colors = more nutrients.

  • Home Environment
What it is: A space that feels safe, clean, and peaceful.

How to Nourish: Clear one “clutter hotspot” like your nightstand or gym bag. A tidy corner = a calmer brain.

  • Joy
What it is: The things that bring you genuine happiness and laughter.

How to Nourish: Schedule 15 minutes of “pointless fun” daily—dance in your kitchen, watch a funny video, or belt out your Yeti battle cry.

  • Social Life
What it is: Time spent with people who uplift, energize, and challenge you.

How to Nourish: Say yes to one gathering or class a month outside your routine (like Untamed group classes or outings!). You never know where your next supportive “pack” might be.

  • Spirituality
What it is: Connection to something greater — whatever that looks like for you.

How to Nourish: Start a 2-minute gratitude ritual before bed. No need to chant on a mountaintop (unless you’re into that)—just list three things that made you smile today.

  • Creativity
What it is: Expressing yourself through art, writing, music, movement, or wild ideas.

How to Nourish: Pick up doodling, writing silly poetry, or even inventing new kettlebell exercises (like the “Gemini Squat”). Creativity thrives when it’s low-pressure.
