
This is something I see ALL the time, that is as avoidable (and fixable) as bunions!
The Dowager’s hump happens when our head is in a forward position for too long, causing excessive strain on the spine. When our body is not functionally strong enough to hold correct neck posture and alignment, what happens is something truly remarkable…
Our bodies are dumb/smart. 😯
Instead of fixing the problem of posture, and strengthening the muscles that support the neck in a better, less forward-leaning fashion, our bodies just make sure our spine is protected in this position.
That body protrusion of our spine is covered up with an ‘oh-so-attractive’ protective layer of fat – is is CAUSED by poor posture, but FIXED by our dumb/smart bodies just wanting not to have our spine stick out of our backs like a Stegosaurus.
Now, here’s the kicker – this whole thing happens because your posture muscles are not strong enough to keep your head back in a neutral position. BUUUUTTTTT the more forward leaning your head position is, the HEAVIER your head feels on your already weak neck muscles, thereby exacerbating the whole dang issue! 🫨
Even a ONE INCH forward lean can add TEN POUNDS of weight to your head (isn’t physics fun?)😩
So what is there to do?
Two words – Functional. Fitness.
